Hundreds of customers have taken the time to let us know about their experience with Knight Furniture. Here's a small sampling of real customers who wanted to share their success stories:
Knight Furniture Company has based their business on truly personal service, quality home furnishings and guaranteed low prices. That was J. B. Knight's dream and for three generations the Knight family has worked hard to see that he, and our friends and customers throughout north Texas and southern Oklahoma, are proud of his legacy.
J. B. Knight was born the son of a Baptist Preacher in 1893. He began his furniture career at the age of sixteen as a driver for the Tyler House Furnishing company, and then just three years later at the age of 19, in 1912, he had saved enough money to open his own business in downtown Sherman. With a thousand dollars he leased a 25-foot building, the Grand Theater property, in the 200 block of East Houston. Given the economic times, most of his trade was in used furniture. However by 1915 his business had out grown the small building and J. B. Knight relocated his business to our current location on the South side of the square in downtown Sherman. Two years later he purchased his building and expanded the size of his operation, eventually occupying the entire 150-foot front we have today.
In 1924 J. B.'s younger brother, S. L. Knight, known by most as Sam, at age 20, joined the thriving business and together they built Knight Furniture Company into one of the largest furniture retailers in North Texas.
Unfortunately, the brothers faced a major setback on October 20, 1931 when the Knight Furniture building was virtually destroyed by fire. Not willing to give up his dream, J. B. Knight and his brother immediately began to rebuild on the same site, and soon had built one of the most modern structures in downtown Sherman.
Needing more showroom and warehouse space, Knight furniture eventually grew to occupy 3/4 of the city block. In 1991 Knight Furniture opened a second store in Gainesville.
